Clinton promotes Shaheen at Manchester rally

MANCHESTER--Former Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton told voters that ex-Gov. Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury) would bring "commonsense" experience to Washington.

Shaheen is running against current U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley) in a rematch of their 2002 race.

"You need in Washington what you have in New Hampshire," Clinton said. "When Jeanne Shaheen was Governor she balanced the budget. She also kept the tax burden in New Hampshire the lowest in the nation."

Clinton added, "She will bring those commonsense, pragmatic, problem-solving experiences to Washington, which desperately needs them."

A new WMUR/UNH poll shows that Shaheen has a 16-point-lead among women over Sununu (R-Waterville Valley), while Barack Obama is leading John McCain by 21 points among female voters.

Clinton also praised Gov. John Lynch's "bipartisan" approach to government.

"Governor Lynch has acted in bipartisan, really a non-partisan way, looking at problems, honestly and realistically," she said.

In December 2007 Shaheen's husband, Billy Shaheen had to resign as co-chairman of Clinton's New Hampshire campaign after he told The Washington Post that Republicans would use Obama's drug history against him.
